Maine Educational Opportunity Association

An organization of professional, associate, and program members working together for equitable access to educational opportunities.

Previous Updates from the Executive Committee

March 2013

While we are all very concerned about the effects sequestration will have on our programs and the students we serve, the Maine Educational Opportunity Association remains focused and committed to our work. Many of the projects we have undertaken this year have been completed. Additionally, representatives from MEEOA and Maine are going to Washington to attend Policy Seminar in order to help educate Maine's Congressional Delegation about the history and the success of TRIO.

We have meetings scheduled with Senator Collins, Senator King, Congresswoman Pingree and Congressman Michaud next week, Tuesday, March 12th. An Upward Bound Alumni will also be attending with us who will be able to share this personal story and experiences. We greatly appreciate Maine's Congressional Delegation's time and support.

Our Factbook for 2012-2013 has been completed and printed. We have completed our Strategic Plan and have also completed the first draft of our new Transition manual. We have additionally completed role descriptions that outline tasks associated with each of the positions. We have dedicated a portion of our first meeting in September 2013 for orientation. All these documents are available on our website. You may have also learned that a video collection has been added to the MEEOA website with TRIO students sharing their personal experiences.

Hopefully, people have been exploring the MEEOA website because we have been working to consistently add and update information and resources. We are also seeking individuals who have an interest in joining the executive committee or other committees for the 2013-2014 year.

I encourage you to contact us or review the minutes from our meetings to learn more. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at shawn.graham@maine.edu.

We hope you were as pleased with our annual conference as we were. It was great to network with new and old friends as well as attend some of the great breakout sessions. We also held our first Maine Emerging Leaders preconference and are already discussing plans for next year's conference.

We would like to extend our appreciation to our sponsors this year: Machias Savings Bank, our Conference Sponsor; Camden National Bank, a Coffee Break Sponsor; the Finance Authority of Maine, a Coffee Break Sponsor; and Husson University, the Sponsor of our President's Reception. We appreciate your support and thank you for assisting us in the work we do!

We will be meeting in the coming months to continue to the work we have undertaken this year. We have plans to attend Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C. with Alumni this March and look forward to seeing those who attend the New England Educational Opportunity Association conference in April.

I encourage you to contact us or review the minutes from our meetings to learn more. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at shawn.graham@maine.edu.

December 2012

This year is well underway and committee members have been hard at work on several projects. We have been focusing our efforts on strategic planning, transition planning and of course, our annual conference. We have also been exploring areas for future growth that include alumni development, establishing a 501 (c)(3) and beginning a development committee.

The annual conference is fast approaching and the conference co-chairs report they have over 60 registrations. We have great sessions planned for you and this year’s conference promises to continue to provide great learning and networking opportunities. In addition to providing a full slate of sessions covering areas such as student engagement and advocacy, this year we will host the newly developed Maine Emerging Leaders Institute pre-conference.

Our strategic planning committee has been progressing and the committee plans to release a draft of the plan before the conference. Our hope is to receive comments from association members prior to the conference.

For members who have been interested in becoming involved in the state association, we have been working on transition planning. We have been developing our position descriptions and working on a transition manual that will be used for orientation at the start of each year. If you are interested and would like to talk with someone or sit in on a meeting, let us know.

We are of course continuing to work on projects such as our Factbook, Fairshare contributions, updating our website as well as increasing membership and participating on the New England Educational Opportunity Association Board.

These are just a few of the areas MEEOA is committed to advancing. I encourage you to contact us or check out the minutes from our meetings to learn more. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at shawn.graham@maine.edu.
