Senate Agrees to Fund TRIO at $500 Million!!!

On Friday, September 27th, the Senate agreed to maintain TRIO funding at $500 million, the amount asked for in President Clinton's original budget proposal. The Senate had originally slashed TRIO funding to $477 million, a figure that would not have allowed any new TRIO programs to receive funding. The Democrats had tried to reinstate the money with the Harkin Amendment, but the Republicans had countered with the Lott Amendment. With the budget deadline approaching, the Republicans finally agreed to reinstate TRIO funding at $500 million and increase the maximum Pell Grant allowance.
